HI GD fans,
This was my second show I attended by the Grateful Dead. I am from Louisville and my first show was when the GD played Freedom Hall in ... spring 1989. And just to make it more weird, the GD played my hometown on my 5th birthday; too bad my parents were not deadheads so they didn't take me way back then!
This was the summer tour of 1990 and the previous spring tour was so good that the whole tour had been commercially released. This show is worthy of a release especially since the concert sound was surprisingly very poor; almost all the audience tapes reflect that sound. In fact, the local stagehand union had to sub contract labor from UPS to handle the massive PA that didn't sound massive at all. I recall my dad telling me to be careful as local police were undercover in the parking lot which was in contrast to the spring 1989 show were limited camping was at the state fairgrounds. Hence, there were many arrests on the TV news. The other aspect about the show was the seriously Kentucky hot sweaty weather with high humidity, so much ol JG was wearing shorts.
After Bruce Hornsby's set which was almost not even heard as the PA was half gain in output, the Grateful Dead take the stage with the glaring hot sun behind the stage so the audience is just blinded by the sun which was a buzz kill to say the least. The PA was still lame for the Grateful Dead until the last tune of the 1st set. However, the 1st set was unusually long for some reason lasting about 80 minutes. There is some great playing in the first set too; it seems the GD ALWAYS play Ramble On Rose in Louisville, maybe it's a reference to the Ky Derby ?
Well, after the set break the GD take the stage as the sun makes it's way closer to setting which was a welcomed relief. Some absolutely great playing in this set and I argue it was the best second set of the summer 1990 tour. China Cat is really cool but after Standing on the Moon ( a angelic version) we hear the opening riff to "He's Gone" and everybody thought well this is going to be a sleeper show and hope for something rocking post space. However, after He's Gone we get a nice bluesy He's Gone Jam that leads into another significant Jam I've never heard anything so intense, with hints of triplets Other One beats but it's the closest the GD come to jazz fusion I've heard - everyone was jaw opened and elated from the verve by the band's energy. This jam happened as the sun was setting into a deep orange dusk natural sky back drop.
As we cruise into space and drums the light is dwindled and pow a post space Truckin' which was just what the doctor ordered; couple this with a Wharf Rat > GDTRFB > Around and Around and it's 1978 again! I do also remember the large "Alligator" and "Dancing Skeleton" inflatable props that came out during this part of the show; that was cool in itself.
I like this AUD source the best . I'd still like to hear some more shotgun sources as the FOB are littered with bad stereo imaging and loud obnoxious crowd cheer, the only drawback of the analog world is usually the Jam is cut by a tape flip but what are ya going to do ? Hopefully, this show will be commercially available in the near future.
